The game was over, Rafiq was quietly contemplating the container
paradox(see note 1). Now was tournament time, any survivor of the game
was allowed to join with up to 5 others and try to take down one of The
Dead. Rafiq was one of the 19 current Dead (see note 2) - no one really
knew how many there were since the number was fluid. Rafiq had spotted
the 6 when he entered the inn and knew what weapons they used by the
time he was seated. As soon as they began to move, Rafiq felt the
familiar surge as the world slowed to a crawl and he flowed through the
crowded inn disarming the 6. His private name for such opponents was
'meatslabs'. They were well-trained but they moved so slowly that 3 of
the 4 's'es were almost unnecessary (speed, skill, stamina and
strength). The katana, knife-blades and quarterstaff he let pass within
a whiskers-width but his contempt for the flail was such that he took it
away from the opponent and strangled him with it. The others he dropped
with various hits to nerve clusters - The Dead were not allowed to kill
in these tournaments and no Dead was ever killed in one; hell, anyone
who actually struck one of The Dead would be rich.
