She kept Open mind and her Awareness found the general

    The general arrived with his guards and Varjak slipped into Slow
time and began Shadow-walking as the company entered the courtyard. The
archer noiced the tracks in the snow first and prepared to fire; Varjak
slipped out of Shadow then stepped sideways in front of the lead guard
with the archer swivelling to follow - the release put an arrow into the
back of the lead guard who fired his crossbow, injuring the horse of the
guard next to him. The war-horse reared and pivoted towards the
crossbowman as the crossbowman fell out of his saddle and under the
rearing horse knocking it off balance - it fell and rolled crushing the
legs of its rider. While confusion ruled, Varjak (still in Slow time)
lept for the wall and was over it, gone before the general could bring
his men to order.

By the time a search was started, it was dark and the tracks disappeared
into the trees. Camp was made and guards set with plans to start the
search early next morning.

    The morning guard entered the general's tent to find him nailed to
the ground, barely alive; his eyes had been removed and replaced with 2
concubine rings - message clear, the concubines were not to be harmed.
Harming a concubine would leave a person wishing he were dead.
